Inclusion Winnipeg’s Board of Directors is recruiting new members. This Role Profile serves as a position description.

Role Profile: Board of Directors

Purpose Statement

The vision of Inclusion Winnipeg (IW) is a community where all people are fully included and participating in the community. Our mission is to enhance the lives and status of people living with an intellectual disability by promoting full inclusion and participation in the community.

The Board of Directors is a working board which contributes to the oversight and leadership of the organization; supporting the organization in achieving its mission and vision.


The Directors are collectively responsible to those who request and receive support and services, members, the community, funders and other stakeholders. They are accountable for IW’s performance in relation to its vision, mission and strategic objectives and for the effective stewardship of financial and human resources.

Director Role

All Directors share equally in oversight and leadership responsibilities while acting in the interest of IW. Individual Directors are responsible for acting in the best long-term interests of the organization and its community, and will bring to task informed decision-making and broad knowledge to support IW’s vision and mission.

Director Expectations

  • A passion for the cause – emotional engagement with the mission supported by life experience (self-advocates, parents, caregivers, friends, colleagues, etc.) and ideally, enhanced by a record of community involvement – perhaps working for a similar cause or having relevant experience in another non-profit/charity.)
  • Ability to thoughtfully consider issues, and to articulate those thoughts.
  • A sense of responsibility for making things happens.
  • The time to deliver on a serious commitment to participate actively in the work of the committees of the board (research, comment, act)
  • A willingness to take on tough issues and work to resolution in a collaborative manner.
  • Participate in one (1) or more of the Committees of the Board (currently Governance; Advocacy; Development; and Executive).

Directors are indemnified, as per IW’s bylaws. IW provides director insurance.


Individual Directors have no authority to approve actions of IW, to direct staff, or to speak on behalf of IW unless given such authority by the Board.

Time Commitment


The IW Board meets up to ten (10) times per year for up to three (3) hours. Directors are also encouraged to participate on at least one Board Committee.

Event Attendance

Directors are encouraged to attend events throughout the year. Key events are:

  • The Annual General meeting – three (3) hours, typically in spring
  • Fall for Fashion event – two (2 hours), typically in fall
  • Wild Winter Canoe Race – 1⁄2 day on Louis Riel Day

Time Required

Including Board meetings, Committee meetings, preparation time, committee work, the annual general meeting and other event attendance, Board members should anticipate spending sixty (60) to eighty (80) hours on IW matters annually.

Attendance at Board Meetings

Directors are expected to attend all scheduled Board meetings. The Board strives for perfect attendance, although we do understand that extraordinary situations arise. If a Director is not able to attend a meeting, he/she will advise the President or Executive Director as soon as possible.


This is a volunteer Board. No financial compensation will be provided to Board members; however, appropriate Board-related expenses will be reimbursed according to Board policies.

IW Directors must obtain and maintain a membership with IW. Background Checks

Directors may be required to provide the following:

  • Criminal Record Check (must include Vulnerable Sector Verification)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Adult Abuse Registry Check

All applicants will be asked to provide a one-page statement of interest and/or a current résumé. The statement of interest should include relevant professional, board or volunteer experience, and any should outline relevant skills or experiences.
